Description
This is original Vietnamese flag, still used by South Vietnamese diaspora. This flag is rather symbol of Socialist regime than of the nation. Attempt for pan-symbol is poor, so I went with my own proposal. I preserved yellow star on red as well as red stripes. Width of the border should be almost equal to width of stripes.

I don't think the star should be put in as a pan-symbol. Like you mention, the current flag is totally the symbol of Socialist regime, and I doubt not many radical Vietnamese (a.k.a Vietnamese with a brain and not boo hoo hoo while visiting many symbols of regime) would like their flag has that symbol.
The old one also doesn't actual fit. That flag means: 3 stripes represent 3 parts of the country. Yellow and red mean the people, no matter which part they came from, are the same race: yellow skin, red blood (many Asian like to call their skins yellow, not color). But I doubt it will totally fit, partly because that is a modified version of Imperial Vietnam, pre-WW 2 (Google it, please)
At best, I suppose you should change 3 stripes & the star by the map of country. Yellow & red remain
